In 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/6011def87418a462fcb03978\/t\/69e91dfad34ffd5d1cb6aea5\/1776885242265\/Annual+DAF+Report+2025+Updated+Analysis.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grants from DAFs to charitable organizations reached a new high<\/a> at $64.6 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These grants were critical for nonprofits during the global crisis at a time when, as pointed out by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/nml.21465\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nonprofit Management &amp; Leadership<\/a><\/em>, these charitable organizations faced \u201cincreased demands for services alongside decreased revenues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/donor-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Donors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/daf-insights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advisors<\/a> alike have long known <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/benefits-of-donor-advised-funds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the benefits of DAFs<\/a>, from maximizing tax benefits to building a philanthropic strategy. But nonprofits (and those who lead them) see firsthand the powerful impact they can have on their organizations, especially during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/annual-reports\/daf-spotlight-economic-uncertainty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">times of uncertainty<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nonprofits.freewill.com\/resources\/reports\/daf-report#learn-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025 FreeWill Donor-Advised Fund Report<\/a> found that 83% of nonprofit respondents said that DAFs will be more important to their organization this year compared to the past, because more than half reported an increase in DAF contributions in the year they were surveyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve compiled a list of examples of how grants through donor-advised funds at National Philanthropic Trust have made a difference for nonprofit organizations over the past few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On the Record: Nonprofit Leaders\u2019 Insights on DAFs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>DAF grants allow for sustainable, engaged multi-year relationships<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cDAFs make our work possible. Something unique about DAFs is they often drive a multiyear relationship in ways other kinds of giving don\u2019t, and we really value those relationships.\u201d \u2013 Dan Futrell, CEO of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/the-pat-tillman-foundation-invests-in-veterans-futures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pat Tillman Foundation<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWe would not have gotten where we are today without the support of donor-advised funds. Active, engaged and passionate donors help us move the needle on critical social, civic and social issues our communities are grappling with.\u201d \u2013 Jane Golden, Founder and Executive Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/mural-arts-philadelphia-inspiring-a-city-through-civic-and-social-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mural Arts Philadelphia<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cIt is thanks to our generous donors that we\u2019ve been able to respond to the increased need for food assistance and resources. Philanthropic funds \u2013 like DAFs \u2013 have been the foundation of our COVID-19 response.\u201d \u2013 Elise Krikau, Senior Vice President of Development for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/maryland-food-bank-fighting-hunger-and-food-insecurity-year-round\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryland Food Bank<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Nonprofits are seeing an increase in DAF grants that are forming a solid base of giving for their annual budgets<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cDonor-advised funds are really important to our organization. We\u2019ve received over 400 donor-advised funds [grants] in the last four years.\u201d \u2013 Michele Werner, Interim Chief Philanthropy Officer for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/nurse-family-partnership-brings-care-home-for-first-time-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nurse-Family Partnership<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen, year-over-year, the significant growth of donor-advised funds\u2026 [these gifts] allow the organization to apply where funds are most needed.\u201d \u2013 Melissa Sciacca, Executive Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/sheldrick-wildlife-trust-usa-helping-endangered-elephants-get-a-second-chance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sheldrick Wildlife Trust USA<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The reliability of DAF grants allow nonprofits the flexibility to apply funds where they are most needed\u2014and to experiment for more impactful initiatives<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cDonor-advised funds, and other forms of strategic or planned giving, really play an integral role\u2026 They provide us with stable, long-term endowment funding for the future, as well as support immediate, pressing needs.\u201d \u2013 Adele Hixon-Day, Head of Advancement for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/the-smithsonian-national-museum-of-african-american-history-and-culture-inspires-new-generations-by-examining-the-past\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhat\u2019s amazing about DAFs, and the sustained support we get from donors, is it gives us the ability to be flexible, yet timely. We can apply [DAF grants] where and when we need them the most.\u201d \u2013 Luke Argleben, Director of Development for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/hispanic-access-foundation-creating-vital-connections-across-latino-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hispanic Access Foundation<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWe can make a bigger difference at a faster pace because unrestricted grants from DAFs allow us to immediately address the greatest priority to help children in crisis battling cancer.\u201d \u2013 Sue Harpole, Senior Fellow at ALSAC (American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities) the fundraising and awareness organization for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/st-jude-childrens-research-hospital-helping-children-and-families-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">St. Jude Children\u2019s Research Hospital<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cDuring COVID, so many folks with DAFs came to us and gave heavily.
