{"id":8237,"date":"2023-03-14T11:27:54","date_gmt":"2023-03-14T16:27:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/?p=8237"},"modified":"2024-07-17T10:31:19","modified_gmt":"2024-07-17T15:31:19","slug":"kaboom-is-playing-to-their-potential","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/kaboom-is-playing-to-their-potential\/","title":{"rendered":"KABOOM! is Playing to Their Potential"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Play is at the heart of childhood and essential to healthy emotional, physical and social development.\u202f Playgrounds set the scene for so many core memories and experiences\u2014and they\u2019re just plain fun.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But not every child in the U.S benefits from easily accessible, high-quality playspaces. Between 70 and 80 percent of lower-income and BIPOC-majority census tracts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2254179\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lacked access to recreational facilities<\/a>, as opposed to only 38 percent of predominantly white census tracts.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One innovative nonprofit is dedicated to bridging the playspace equity gap. Over the past 25 years <a href=\"https:\/\/kaboom.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KABOOM!<\/a> has built or improved over 17,000 playspaces across the country. \u201cWe team up with communities where children don\u2019t have safe places to play, and because of our nation\u2019s history of exclusion and disinvestment these are often communities of color,\u201d says Carey Palmquist, the organization\u2019s Chief Program Officer.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building the slides, swings and splash pads that make up the playspaces is a collaboration between community volunteers, professional installers, funding partner volunteers and KABOOM! But to ensure the playspace is a clear representation of the community it belongs to, the kids who will be playing there are invited to <a href=\"https:\/\/kaboom.org\/community-built\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Design Days<\/a>, where they\u2019re given the opportunity to have their voices heard. And what the kids want, the kids will get.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKids are the real experts when it comes to play. Playgrounds are one of the only public spaces designed with young people in mind, but the shame is that we don\u2019t ask for their perspective or input. At a KABOOM! design day, kids get to weigh in on colors, equipment\u2014everything! Seeing their vision come to life at the end of the project is really something special,\u201d Palmquist explains.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"quote-container scroll-watch\">\t\n            <svg width=\"72px\" height=\"52px\" viewBox=\"0 0 72 52\" version=\"1.1\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\">\n                <g stroke=\"none\" stroke-width=\"1\" fill=\"none\" fill-rule=\"evenodd\">\n                    <g transform=\"translate(-405.000000, -1977.000000)\" fill=\"#02B5CC\">\n                        <g transform=\"translate(350.000000, 1278.000000)\">\n                            <g transform=\"translate(55.000000, 647.000000)\">\n                                <path d=\"M40.3135498,103.84 L40.3135498,83.2493458 C40.3135498,59.0250467 61.5991041,52.3633645 72,52 L72,62.9009346 C63.5341545,63.8699065 58.212766,68.1091589 57.7290034,76.708785 L72,76.708785 L72,103.84 L40.3135498,103.84 Z M0,103.84 L0,83.2493458 C0,59.0250467 21.2855543,52.3633645 31.6864502,52 L31.6864502,62.9009346 C23.2206047,63.8699065 17.8992161,68.1091589 17.4154535,76.708785 L31.6864502,76.708785 L31.6864502,103.84 L0,103.84 Z\"><\/path>\n                            <\/g>\n                        <\/g>\n                    <\/g>\n                <\/g>\n            <\/svg>\n    \t\t\t<h2>Individual donors\u2014including NPT donors who support the KABOOM! mission using their DAFs\u2014represent some of the most powerful funding we receive.<\/h2>\n    \t\t<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 11.8 million children have benefitted from KABOOM!\u2019s work, and this impact goes far beyond the immediate benefits of play. \u201cCreating equitable spaces for play is really an investment in the broader health of a community,\u201d Palmquist says. \u201cKids need opportunities to grow and play in order to thrive, and decades of research show how connected active play is to mental, physical and social wellbeing.\u201d\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This past spring, KABOOM! launched their <a href=\"https:\/\/kaboom.org\/25-in-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">25 in 5 Initiative<\/a>, an ambitious plan to raise $250 million to end playspace inequity in 25 locations throughout the U.S. over the next five years, <a href=\"https:\/\/kaboom.org\/about\/press\/releases\/baltimore-25-in-5-partnership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beginning in Baltimore<\/a>. Plans like the 25 in 5 Initiative wouldn\u2019t be possible without consistent funding from passionate and engaged donors. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/trust-based-philanthropy-a-primer-for-donors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Unrestricted grants<\/a> are especially important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIndividual donors\u2014including NPT donors who support the KABOOM! mission using their DAFs\u2014represent some of the most powerful funding we receive,\u201d says Palmquist. \u201cDonors acknowledging KABOOM! with this vote of confidence show us that they are on board with our vision and trust in our ability to direct resources to where they can make the greatest impact and are needed most acutely, whether that\u2019s responding to communities in crisis, measuring our impact or moving <a href=\"https:\/\/kaboom.org\/public-policy-and-advocacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our public policy agenda forward<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uvalde, Texas, where KABOOM! was invited to work with community members to build <a href=\"https:\/\/kaboom.org\/stories\/uvalde-community-healing-through-community-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">playspaces to promote healing<\/a> after the devastating 2022 school shooting is a prime example. Donor support enabled KABOOM! to respond quickly to devastating events and the organization has been able to commit to building 12 more playspaces throughout the community in addition to their original build.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KABOOM!\u2019s mission is unique, collaborative and infuses a real joy for kids. But most importantly, it\u2019s achievable. Palmquist believes that the end of playspace inequity is in sight. \u201cWe owe it to our young people to do whatever we can to build a more joyful, equitable world that gives them everything they need to thrive. This is a challenge we\u2019re meeting head-on,\u201d said Palmquist. \u201cIt\u2019s both urgent and lifelong work, and I am convinced that it\u2019s possible if we\u2019re bold, visionary, and highly collaborative.
