For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.feedingamerica.org\/take-action\/campaigns\/summer-hunger#:~:text=Closed%20Schools%20%3D%20Summer%20Hunger,90%20days%20without%20reliable%20food.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an estimated 22 million children in the United States<\/a>, summer is a time of hunger and food insecurity. According to a study from the Urban Institute, \u201cHouseholds with children have higher rates of food insecurity during the summer months because more people are at home and fewer resources are available without school lunches.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is especially pressing in <a href=\"https:\/\/mdfoodbank.org\/hunger-in-maryland\/maryland-hunger-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryland<\/a>, where an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.feedingamerica.org\/hunger-in-america\/maryland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one in seven children face hunger<\/a>. \u201cHunger and food insecurity is a year-round challenge,\u201d explains Elise Krikau, the Senior Vice President of Development for the <a href=\"https:\/\/mdfoodbank.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryland Food Bank<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the ways the Maryland Food Bank helps children stay fed this time of year is through their Summer Club. In addition to their summer programs, they hold Supper Clubs throughout the school year for children who need meals after class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This summer, the Maryland Food Bank will get to transition back to in-person, hot meals from the to-go bags and boxes they provided for families at the height of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/covid-19-now-updated-insights-for-donors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since March 2020, the organization has distributed 97 million meals to Marylanders, completely free of charge. \u201cHistorically there has been a nominal fee, [but] we\u2019ve been able to provide food at no cost,\u201d Krikau says, adding, \u201cPhilanthropic support has been a key part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/what-is-a-donor-advised-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Donor-advised funds (DAFs)<\/a> have been an important ingredient in the food bank\u2019s ability to serve their communities in times of crisis. In its 2019 fiscal year, the Maryland Food Bank received around 500 grants from DAFs, but the 2020 fiscal year saw a jump to 1,200 grants and then 1,600 grants in FY2021, an increase of 220% in two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is thanks to our generous donors that we\u2019ve been able to respond to the increased need for food assistance and resources,\u201d she says. <strong>\u201cPhilanthropic funds \u2013 like DAFs \u2013 have been the foundation of our COVID-19 response.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHopefully, we\u2019ll continue to see that progress, [as] they\u2019re a great giving vehicle that gives us the most flexibility\u201d Krikau says. She notes that DAFs not only help with the organization\u2019s general operations and ongoing programs (like the Summer Club), but their overall mission \u201cto address root causes, build pathways and help get people out of the cycle [of hunger and food insecurity]. This will be especially important, she says, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/how-inflation-impacts-nonprofits-and-what-donors-can-do-to-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as people grapple with inflation<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maryland is the most diverse state on the East Coast, and she notes, \u201cevery community is different.\u201d The organization honors this diversity by focusing on culturally appropriate foods and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDistributing food in a dignified manner\u201d is another key aspect of what Maryland Food Bank does, Krikau explains. \u201cWe want to hear from our communities.
