{"id":7272,"date":"2022-06-17T12:09:25","date_gmt":"2022-06-17T17:09:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/?p=7272"},"modified":"2025-10-31T08:57:35","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T13:57:35","slug":"for-refugees-around-the-world-hias-brings-hope-and-healing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/for-refugees-around-the-world-hias-brings-hope-and-healing\/","title":{"rendered":"For Refugees Around the World, HIAS Brings Hope and Healing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each year, June 20th marks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/en-us\/world-refugee-day.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Refugee Day<\/a>, an observance created by the United Nations to honor refugees around the globe, calling attention to the plight of those fleeing conflict, discrimination and destitution. For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hias.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HIAS<\/a>, every day since its inception in 1881 has been dedicated to assisting and advocating for refugees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year is no exception. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrefugees.org\/refugee-facts\/statistics\/#:~:text=Global%20Trends%20At%2Da%2DGlance&amp;text=This%20includes%3A,4.4%20million%20asylum%2Dseekers.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Nations Human Rights Council<\/a>, more than 100 million people have been displaced in 2022 so far, the highest amount of people ever on record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These numbers will grow with the prolonged Russian invasion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/how-donors-can-continue-to-support-humanitarian-efforts-in-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ukraine<\/a>, which has thus far displaced an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-60555472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14 million people<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve been absorbed in responding to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hias.org\/hias-responds-crisis-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the growing humanitarian crisis<\/a> in Ukraine, a country where HIAS has a long history,\u201d explains the organization\u2019s Vice President of Development, Miriam Feffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HIAS works in twenty countries around the world (including a new location in Poland for those working on the Ukraine crisis) and helps place arrivals with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hias.org\/what\/resettlement-partners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resettlement partners across the U.S.<\/a> They also assist refugees with legal aid, mental health counseling, economic integration and respond to gender-based violence. HIAS also organizes volunteers into \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hias.org\/get-involved\/welcome-circles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Welcome Circles<\/a>\u201d to give new refugees a built-in network upon arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society was founded in 1881 to help Jewish refugees fleeing persecution in Europe and continued into the twentieth century by aiding war refugees and subsequently Jews fleeing the Soviet Union. The organization helped resettle South Asian refugees in the 1970s, and in the 2000s expanded to help refugees worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the current refugee numbers in Ukraine and throughout the world (including the Middle East, Latin America and Africa) are nothing short of staggering, Feffer says that HIAS has witnessed a response to match the volume and severity of the crises. \u201cCommunities around the world come together to offer their help,\u201d she said, inspiring and allowing the staff at HIAS to do their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since Russia\u2019s invasion began in February, Feffer says that the organization has \u201cseen an outpouring of support at all levels,\u201d including more than $29 million in donations. That number surpassed the organization\u2019s total annual fundraising during the 2021 calendar year: $25.6 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaking a gift to HIAS this year, more than ever, is a way to act on your values,\u201d Feffer says. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/six-ways-donors-can-extend-their-giving-strategy-in-response-to-disasters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Long-term giving<\/a> and grants from donor-advised funds (DAF) are \u201ccritical to sustaining our success,\u201d she notes, explaining that reliable funding also ensures \u201cthat when the next crisis is down the road, we\u2019re ready for it.\u201d Last year, HIAS received approximately 2,900 gifts from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/donor-advised-funds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">donor-advised funds<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"quote-container scroll-watch\">\t\n            <svg width=\"72px\" height=\"52px\" viewBox=\"0 0 72 52\" version=\"1.1\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\">\n                <g stroke=\"none\" stroke-width=\"1\" fill=\"none\" fill-rule=\"evenodd\">\n                    <g transform=\"translate(-405.000000, -1977.000000)\" fill=\"#02B5CC\">\n                        <g transform=\"translate(350.000000, 1278.000000)\">\n                            <g transform=\"translate(55.000000, 647.000000)\">\n                                <path d=\"M40.3135498,103.84 L40.3135498,83.2493458 C40.3135498,59.0250467 61.5991041,52.3633645 72,52 L72,62.9009346 C63.5341545,63.8699065 58.212766,68.1091589 57.7290034,76.708785 L72,76.708785 L72,103.84 L40.3135498,103.84 Z M0,103.84 L0,83.2493458 C0,59.0250467 21.2855543,52.3633645 31.6864502,52 L31.6864502,62.9009346 C23.2206047,63.8699065 17.8992161,68.1091589 17.4154535,76.708785 L31.6864502,76.708785 L31.6864502,103.84 L0,103.84 Z\"><\/path>\n                            <\/g>\n                        <\/g>\n                    <\/g>\n                <\/g>\n            <\/svg>\n    \t\t\t<h2>Last year, HIAS received approximately 2,900 gifts from donor-advised funds.<\/h2>\n    \t\t<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These philanthropic gifts primarily help with organizational and operating costs and maintaining a diverse staff of over 1,500 employees. \u201cWhen someone can invest in the spaces we need, and the people we need to do the work, that has an impact that pays dividends for generations,\u201d Feffer says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, the impact from donors can be directly felt by those who rely on the services and help HIAS provides. HIAS shares dozens upon dozens of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hias.org\/mystory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refugee stories<\/a> on their website, which Feffer says shows the common humanity we all share, while \u201ccelebrating differences and individual journeys.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The powerful stories of refugees not only give insight and meaning but also allow donors to see that their donation, as Feffer explains, \u201callows a particular refugee to receive the tools they\u2019ll need to survive the intense physical and\/or emotional trauma they\u2019ve experienced so they can go on to live healthy and fulfilled lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because, at the end of the day, no matter where you\u2019re from or what your circumstances are, Feffer points out, \u201cEveryone wants to protect their family.
