Many climate advocates urge the world to act fast to mitigate the worst effects of a warming planet. The Massachusetts-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whoi.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution<\/a> (WHOI) sees an unsung hero in this crisis: the world\u2019s oceans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs the climate changes and the oceans warm, we see this as a time to act,\u201d says WHOI\u2019s Chief Development Officer, Court Clayton. He says that the team of over 1,000 scientists, engineers and students at Woods Hole is optimistic and that while the oceans are at risk, they also hold the keys to our planet\u2019s survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With oceans covering two-thirds of the Earth\u2019s surface, their livelihood is deeply interconnected with the rest of the planet. Climate change causes the oceans to absorb more heat, which raises sea levels and ocean temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clayton says that there is \u201cstill hope here.\u201d However, it is essential for scientists to lead the way in this ongoing fight: \u201cWe must develop the solutions to protect our oceans.\u201d Climate action, conservation and new technology all require scientific knowledge. In fact, Woods Hole has been instrumental in major historic events, from the 1985 discovery of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whoi.edu\/know-your-ocean\/ocean-topics\/ocean-human-lives\/underwater-archaeology\/rms-titanic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Titanic<\/a><\/em> to critical findings in the wake of 2011\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whoi.edu\/oceanus\/special-series\/the-deepwater-horizon-oil-spill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deepwater Horizon<\/a> oil spill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in 1930, the organization\u2019s vision and work has only been amplified in the face of the climate crisis, with what Clayton describes as \u201ctransforming ocean science for the global good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WHOI\u2019s dedicated team is doing this through a variety of efforts like deploying <a href=\"https:\/\/argo.ucsd.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">floating data collectors called Argo floats<\/a> to monitor ocean temperature and salinity, research and development on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whoi.edu\/press-room\/news-release\/whoi-advancing-a-seaweed-solution-to-develop-new-kelp-strains\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aquaculture<\/a> and fisheries, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whoi.edu\/know-your-ocean\/ocean-topics\/ocean-life\/coral\/reef-ecosystems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coral reef monitoring and restoration<\/a> and other vital enterprises. Clayton notes that while 85% of WHOI\u2019s funding comes from competitive research grants and government funding, philanthropic funding is especially important when it comes to making strides in new topics or areas with limited funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clayton points out that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/donor-advised-funds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">donor-advised funds (DAFs)<\/a> allow Woods Hole to \u201ctake big risks\u201d and invest time and resources into building expertise in emerging and important research areas\u2014like <a href=\"https:\/\/microplastics.whoi.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">microplastics pollution<\/a> in the oceans. With the help of donors, \u201cThis is an area where we can make moves,\u201d says Clayton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Donors seem to be rising to the challenge. \u201cPeople are hungry to be part of the solution,\u201d Clayton says. <strong>Over the past five years, WHOI has seen a noticeable increase in donor-advised fund dollars, more than tripling their DAF donor count from 86 to 270.<\/strong> With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/donor-advised-funds\/daf-impact-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long-term and multi-year giving<\/a> on the rise, Clayton says that \u201cwe\u2019ve built the momentum\u201d to continue their ongoing efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s not the only one who feels inspired by the efforts of donors in recent years, as WHOI President and Director Dr. Peter de Menocal tells us, <strong>\u201cNational Philanthropic Trust&#8217;s network of donors are an incredibly important resource for our oceans, and the urgent research innovation that is needed to drive the solutions to our planet&#8217;s biggest
