Donors who contribute their blood stem cells can help save the lives of patients with blood cancers, like leukemia, and other diseases. Based in Alameda in the surrounding Bay Area, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aadp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Asian American Donor Program (AADP),<\/a> is a nonprofit dedicated to saving lives by supporting both patients and donors alike.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For patients who need a donor, AADP not only tries to find a possible, lifesaving match through national registries, but, as Carol Gillespie, the group\u2019s Executive Director, puts it, \u201c[we] make sure they understand they have a partner in this challenging time in their life.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<div class=\"quote-container scroll-watch\">\t\n            <svg width=\"72px\" height=\"52px\" viewBox=\"0 0 72 52\" version=\"1.1\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\">\n                <g stroke=\"none\" stroke-width=\"1\" fill=\"none\" fill-rule=\"evenodd\">\n                    <g transform=\"translate(-405.000000, -1977.000000)\" fill=\"#02B5CC\">\n                        <g transform=\"translate(350.000000, 1278.000000)\">\n                            <g transform=\"translate(55.000000, 647.000000)\">\n                                <path d=\"M40.3135498,103.84 L40.3135498,83.2493458 C40.3135498,59.0250467 61.5991041,52.3633645 72,52 L72,62.9009346 C63.5341545,63.8699065 58.212766,68.1091589 57.7290034,76.708785 L72,76.708785 L72,103.84 L40.3135498,103.84 Z M0,103.84 L0,83.2493458 C0,59.0250467 21.2855543,52.3633645 31.6864502,52 L31.6864502,62.9009346 C23.2206047,63.8699065 17.8992161,68.1091589 17.4154535,76.708785 L31.6864502,76.708785 L31.6864502,103.84 L0,103.84 Z\"><\/path>\n                            <\/g>\n                        <\/g>\n                    <\/g>\n                <\/g>\n            <\/svg>\n    \t\t\t<h2>Since their inception in 1989, the Asian American Donor Program has helped coordinate hundreds of matches for bone marrow and stem cell transplants.<\/h2>\n    \t\t<\/div>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The organization does this by creating media and outreach campaigns, including videos that tell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aadp.org\/categories\/patients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the patient\u2019s story<\/a>, to reach the largest audience possible. For those who do wish to become donors, AADP provides the tools and resources necessary to get them on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aadp.org\/learn\/homekit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">match registry,<\/a> including home testing kits.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once a match is found, AADP provides the same level of care and guidance for donors as they do for patients. As Gillespie puts it, \u201cWe do everything we possibly can to ensure that you, the donor, are protected and healthy.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AADP not only coordinates between donors and their potential matches, they also provide vital education and outreach, holding registration drives across the Bay\u2019s diverse communities. Gillespie says the key to outreach is rooted in being culturally competent. \u201cYou have to respect the community, their language and their culture.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is especially important considering the disparities racial minorities face in healthcare access and in blood stem cell donor registries. One <a href=\"https:\/\/sitn.hms.harvard.edu\/flash\/2019\/racial-minorities-trouble-with-stem-cell-transplants-a-dearth-of-donors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harvard Medical School summary found that <\/a>\u201cIn the U.S., racial minorities are much less likely to find a suitable blood stem cell donor than White Americans.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aadp.org\/learn\/ethnicity-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AADP estimates<\/a> that Asian and Pacific Islander patients have only a 41 percent chance of finding a donor (compared to a 77 percent chance for white people).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ethnicity can be essential when it comes to being a donor, as AADP notes, \u201ca patient\u2019s ethnic background is important in predicting the likelihood of finding a match.\u201d The larger and more diverse the donor registry, the likelier transplants will increase and outcomes will improve for minority patients.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8743384\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent literature review on the subject<\/a> found that \u201cIncreased health literacy [and] access to transplant information and referral patterns,\u201d like the kind AADP provides \u201care manageable and pertinent solutions which can ultimately improve patient outcomes.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since their inception in 1989, AADP has helped in finding 630 matches, and though their work is localized to the Bay Area, their mission is nationwide. Gillespie explains, \u201cIf someone across the country wants to do a drive, we\u2019ll send them a [kit] with all the materials and educational information they\u2019ll need.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, there are other kinds of donors that can help support AADP\u2019s mission: financial donors. Gillespie explains that fundraising dollars go towards the organization\u2019s important day-to-day operations, coordination, education and outreach. <strong>When it comes to long-term giving, as provided by <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/donor-advised-funds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>donor-advised funds (DAF),<\/strong><\/a><strong> Gillespie says, \u201cit helps us to sustain our goals and to plan for the future.\u201d A lifesaver in and of itself.&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>San Francisco is
