This new series, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/grants-in-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grants In Action<\/a>, highlights the breadth of causes and organizations NPT\u2019s donors are supporting with grant recommendations from their donor-advised fund accounts.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDefeating malaria is a marathon, not a sprint.\u201d That is how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.againstmalaria.com\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Against Malaria Foundation<\/a> (AMF) founder and CEO Rob Mather describes the ongoing race against ending this deadly, yet preventable infectious disease. Mather, along with his team of ten based in London, have been focused on reaching that finish line since the nonprofit organization\u2019s inception in 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their mission, according to Mather, \u201cis to rid the planet of one of the most significant killers of children under 5-years-old and pregnant women.\u201d According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/malaria\/php\/impact\/?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/malaria\/malaria_worldwide\/impact.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centers for Disease Control (CDC)<\/a>, malaria claimed 627,000 lives in 2020 alone, and \u201cnearly half the world\u2019s population lives in areas at risk of malaria transmission in 87 countries and territories.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cClearly, this is a humanitarian issue given the suffering that\u2019s involved,\u201d Mather says. To combat this ongoing crisis, AMF helps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.againstmalaria.com\/Fundraise.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fund<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.againstmalaria.com\/Distributions.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">distribute<\/a> long-lasting insecticidal nets (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.againstmalaria.com\/WhyNets.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LLIN<\/a>) to regions of the world with what Mather calls high-burden and medium-burden malaria. The CDC reports that the highest transmission rates occur in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as parts of Oceania, such as Papua New Guinea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These nets, which only cost around $2 to produce and are highly effective at stopping mosquitos dead in their tracks, can last up to four years and protect two people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"quote-container scroll-watch\">\t\n            <svg width=\"72px\" height=\"52px\" viewBox=\"0 0 72 52\" version=\"1.1\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\">\n                <g stroke=\"none\" stroke-width=\"1\" fill=\"none\" fill-rule=\"evenodd\">\n                    <g transform=\"translate(-405.000000, -1977.000000)\" fill=\"#02B5CC\">\n                        <g transform=\"translate(350.000000, 1278.000000)\">\n                            <g transform=\"translate(55.000000, 647.000000)\">\n                                <path d=\"M40.3135498,103.84 L40.3135498,83.2493458 C40.3135498,59.0250467 61.5991041,52.3633645 72,52 L72,62.9009346 C63.5341545,63.8699065 58.212766,68.1091589 57.7290034,76.708785 L72,76.708785 L72,103.84 L40.3135498,103.84 Z M0,103.84 L0,83.2493458 C0,59.0250467 21.2855543,52.3633645 31.6864502,52 L31.6864502,62.9009346 C23.2206047,63.8699065 17.8992161,68.1091589 17.4154535,76.708785 L31.6864502,76.708785 L31.6864502,103.84 L0,103.84 Z\"><\/path>\n                            <\/g>\n                        <\/g>\n                    <\/g>\n                <\/g>\n            <\/svg>\n    \t\t\t<h2>Major, sizeable donations can be put to work immediately and make a huge difference.<\/h2>\n    \t\t<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mather estimates that the goal of ridding malaria from the planet (even with the aid of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/06-10-2021-who-recommends-groundbreaking-malaria-vaccine-for-children-at-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vaccines<\/a>) is going to take potentially a decade or more, which is where planned, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/dafs-in-focus-dafs-address-both-near-and-long-term-nonprofit-need\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long-term giving<\/a>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/what-is-a-donor-advised-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">donor-advised funds (DAFs)<\/a> are particularly helpful for an organization like theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt allows us, when we know of [long-term] donations that are coming our way, to plan [several] years ahead,\u201d Mather says, adding that long-term giving allows AMF to \u201cevaluate opportunities to allocate our resources and make a fundamental difference to the way we go about our work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/donor-advised-funds\/daf-impact-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Planned giving<\/a> is particularly helpful when it comes to malaria control, Mather explains, \u201cright down to the right number of nets getting to each individual household.\u201d Distribution of the accurate number of nets, he continues, \u201ctypically takes place over several weeks or months across a country, and that requires years of planning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Due to significant funding gaps that worldwide malaria eradication faces, Mather notes that \u201cmajor, sizeable donations can be put to work immediately and make a huge difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, donations of all sizes and time frames are significant when it comes to aiding AMF\u2019S ongoing work. AMF reports that in 2021 they received 148,000 donations from people in 189 countries. As Mather puts it, \u201cEvery two dollars matters. Every two dollars buys a net, and [that net] protects two people.
