We have faced some unprecedented moments\u00a0<\/span>this year<\/span>, and\u00a0<\/span>the experience ha<\/span>s all of us\u00a0<\/span>thinking about what\u2019s really important<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2014<\/span>\u00a0including philanthropic giving<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>spending time with family<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Your clients may be looking<\/span>\u00a0for a more holistic approach to<\/span>\u00a0managing their wealth, and\u00a0<\/span>will be looking to you to get involved. In fact, a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>U.S. Trust Study<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>finds\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>clients think it is<\/span>\u00a0critical that a conversation around philanthropic efforts\u00a0<\/span>takes place with<\/span>in the first several meetings.\u00a0<\/span>O<\/span>ne of the fastest-growing ways to<\/span>\u00a0give\u00a0<\/span>is through donor-advised funds (DAFs<\/span>), which<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>can be a\u00a0<\/span>useful<\/span>\u00a0tool for family philanthropy and multi-generational giving.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DAFs have grown in popularity not just because o<\/span>f their\u00a0<\/span>simplicity<\/span>, but also because they make\u00a0<\/span>involving the next generation so easy. That makes them\u00a0<\/span>ideal not just for your family-giving-minded clients, but also\u00a0<\/span>in fostering the longevity of the advisor-client relationship<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Over the next two decades,\u00a0<\/span>we will see a\u00a0<\/span>Great Transfer of Wealth<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u2014<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>meaning\u00a0<\/span>more than $68 trillion will be transferred from\u00a0<\/span>Baby<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Boomers\u00a0<\/span>to their heirs<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>In order to\u00a0<\/span>foster the<\/span>\u00a0relationship from one generation to the next,\u00a0<\/span>it will be\u00a0<\/span>important to have\u00a0<\/span>the philanthropic conversation\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0your<\/span>\u00a0clients early and often.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How\u00a0one family used a DAF for their multigenerational giving strategy<\/h3>\n

Nancy and Brian Shaw were<\/span>\u00a0parents of\u00a0<\/span>two\u00a0<\/span>adult children<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Bella and Jake.* Nancy and Brian\u00a0<\/span>wanted to\u00a0<\/span>impress upon<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>their children<\/span>\u00a0the value of ch<\/span>aritable giving<\/span>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/span>but they had their\u00a0<\/span>own charitable giving plan<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>did not want the administrative burden of a family foundation,\u00a0<\/span>and wanted\u00a0<\/span>to afford\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>heir kids\u00a0<\/span>the freedom to\u00a0<\/span>make their own charitable decisions<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span>y chose to\u00a0<\/span>open\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0DAF for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>each child<\/span>, allowing\u00a0<\/span>them each to<\/span>\u00a0have full access to\u00a0<\/span>recommend\u00a0<\/span>grant<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0to the\u00a0<\/span>issues\u00a0<\/span>about which\u00a0<\/span>they were\u00a0<\/span>most\u00a0<\/span>passionate.\u00a0<\/span>Jake\u00a0<\/span>recommended<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>grants to<\/span>\u00a0organizations addressing immigration policy, and\u00a0<\/span>Bella got practice\u00a0<\/span>recommending<\/span>\u00a0grants to\u00a0<\/span>support\u00a0<\/span>wildlife preservation and rescue<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Bella\u00a0<\/span>got particularly interested\u00a0<\/span>in what she could do with her DAF;\u00a0<\/span>in time<\/span>, she\u00a0<\/span>expressed interest\u00a0<\/span>to her family and their financial advisor\u00a0<\/span>in fine-tuning her giving approach<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he advisor<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>helped\u00a0<\/span>put<\/span>\u00a0her<\/span>\u00a0in touch<\/span>\u00a0with NPT\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Philanthropic Services team<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>In addition to providing\u00a0<\/span>a demonstration of the\u00a0<\/span>online giving\u00a0<\/span>platform<\/span>, the<\/span>\u00a0team\u00a0<\/span>offered\u00a0<\/span>several ways<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>Bella\u00a0<\/span>to become more\u00a0<\/span>focused and informed in her giving<\/span>. This included<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>not just a list of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>organizations<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>doing effective work in her charitable interest area, but also<\/span>\u00a0connections to<\/span>\u00a0a peer giving network based in the city where Bella lived<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>n organization working with<\/span>\u00a0young people\u00a0<\/span>grappling with wealth transfer.\u00a0<\/span>Throughout this process, the\u00a0<\/span>family\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>advisor worked with\u00a0<\/span>NPT<\/span>\u00a0to ensure the\u00a0<\/span>Shaw\u00a0<\/span>family had what they needed as they started this new\u00a0<\/span>journey<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The experience of the Shaw family illustrates the way that guidance and education can ensure a smooth transition of wealth, where each party is involved in a conversation about their values and goals. With the proper resources, this transition may also involve giving back \u2014 either to causes that are important to the whole family, or to issues each member of the family holds dear.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To build a foundation for these long-<\/span>term<\/span>\u00a0relationships, it\u2019s critical to involve\u00a0<\/span>the entire family in<\/span>\u00a0talks about charitable visions, values and goals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Here are\u00a0<\/span>a few conversation starters to help:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Is anyone in the family involved with<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>nonprofit\u00a0<\/span>B<\/span>oard<\/span>\u00a0of Directors or Trustees<\/span>?\u00a0<\/span>Do<\/span>es anyone in<\/span>\u00a0the family volunteer anywhere regularly?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> What do you want your wealth to achieve?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> What are the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>values<\/span>\u00a0you would like to\u00a0<\/span>pass on to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>your\u00a0<\/span>children<\/span>, and\u00a0<\/span>future\u00a0<\/span>generations<\/span>?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In<\/span>\u00a0talking to clients about DAFs<\/span>, you\u00a0<\/span>can work with\u00a0<\/span>them<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to better\u00a0<\/span>understand their passions<\/span>. This is also an opportunity to let them know how\u00a0<\/span>DAFs can help them not only create a<\/span>\u00a0shared<\/span>\u00a0tradition, but also\u00a0<\/span>establish a<\/span>\u00a0family legacy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
